A double-mercerised cotton, trialled small and then repeated

The buyer wanted to trial a double-mercerised cotton before committing a programme, so the first lot had to be small enough to test without carrying a programme's risk.

What we did

  • A first lot of 40 m in white, small enough for the buyer to judge the cloth rather than the invoice
  • When the white could not be completed in full, the alternative went on the table instead of leaving the order short — 30 m white, with the balance switched to a black cloth
  • The substitution was agreed in writing before anything was cut

Where it stands

The buyer ran the trial, kept the construction, and has since placed a repeat order.

What this story shows is the part that is easy to get wrong: a small first lot still has to be handled as a real order. When the stock position changed mid-way, the buyer was told what was actually available and given a choice, rather than being shipped a short delivery and an apology.
